Scouts Nieuwkerken

Rebuilding the digital home of Scouts Nieuwkerken

I designed and developed a modern website for Scouts Nieuwkerken, a youth organization that has been a big part of my life. The goal was to create a platform that reflects the group’s approachable character while making it easy for current leaders to manage content.

The site was built with a mobile-first approach and powered by a headless CMS, allowing leaders to update announcements, group information, and activities without needing technical knowledge.

Project overview

Scouts Nieuwkerken is a local youth movement that has been an important part of my life. I joined when I was six years old and eventually became the group leader. After stepping away from the leadership team, I wanted to give something back by building a modern website that the current leaders could easily manage.

The goal of the project was to create a future-proof and easy-to-maintain platform that reflects the approachable and community-driven nature of the group. At the same time, it allowed me to apply the skills I learned during my studies and experiment with modern web technologies.

Problem

The previous website was outdated and difficult to maintain. Updating information often required technical knowledge, which made it harder for leaders to keep the site up to date. Important information for parents and members could quickly become outdated.

Another challenge was usability. Most visitors access the website from their phones, so the experience needed to be clear, responsive, and easy to navigate on smaller screens.

Solution

To solve these issues, I designed and developed a modern, mobile-first website that focuses on simplicity and accessibility. The interface was built with clean layouts and clear navigation so visitors can quickly find important information about the group, activities, and leadership.

To make content updates easier, I integrated Contentful as a headless CMS. This allows the leadership team to manage content independently without needing technical skills. By separating the content from the frontend, the website also becomes more flexible and easier to scale in the future.
